We’ve scheduled two workshops for the new year: A HROC workshop in late January and a HIP workshop for adults and youth at the end of February.
Healing and Rebuilding our Communities Basic Workshop, January 24-26
The Healing And Rebuilding Our Communities [HROC] program’s facilitators Santa Sorenson and Ram Bhagat will offer a 3-day Basic workshop for adults on Friday, January 24 from 6-9, Saturday, January 25 from 9-5 PM and Sunday, January 26 from 9-5 PM. We will hold the training at the Fan Free Clinic, 1010 North Thompson Street, Richmond, VA 23230. This workshop, offered by the Richmond Peace Education Center, is designed to promote collaboration among a multi-generational group of both adults, and the Peace Center’s RYPP youth trainers. We will hold the training at the Fan Free Clinic, 1010 North Thompson Street, Richmond, VA 23230.
The HROC basic workshop explores violence, trauma, and its consequences, healing from trauma, loss, grief, anger and trust. Rather than using lectures, HROC facilitators invite participants to discover their own existing knowledge and wisdom for how to heal and how to help others. This approach, developed in East Africa, builds a community among group members. Healing from trauma and building peace between groups are deeply connected. It is not possible to do one without the other.
In order to become a HROC facilitator, four levels of training are required, with the Basic session being the first. Trainers will then be ready to apprentice with experienced facilitators.
The fee for this session is $150. To register, or for more information, email name, address and phone number to email@example.com. Please mail your check in advance to RPEC, 3500 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23221 with HROC Basic in the memo line.
Help Increase the Peace, A Youth-Focused Program in Peace Education
February 28 – March 2
RPEC’s certified HIP trainers Ram Bhagat and Santa Sorenson are offering a Basic HIP, (Help Increase the Peace) Workshop on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 6-9, Saturday, March 1 from 9-5, Sunday, March 2 from 9-5. This workshop is open to adults and youth. As of now we need adults. We will hold the training at the Fan Free Clinic, 1010 North Thompson Street, Richmond, VA 23230.
HIP is a project of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) that teaches youth and adults non-violent approaches to conflict resolution and social change. Through HIP workshops, participants build skills to address conflicts without violence, analyze the effect of social injustice on their lives and the lives of others, and work on taking action for positive, non-violent personal and social change.
All HIP workshops use participatory activities and discussion to help participants build community, develop interpersonal skills, analyze the social forces that contribute to violence, and envision the steps that would lead to a more just world.
The fee is $150 for adults and free to RYPP Youth. Email name, address and phone number to firstname.lastname@example.org to pre-register, or for more information. Please mail your check in advance to RPEC, 3500 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23221 with HIP Basic in the memo line.
