New to Instagram? Want to know what a “hashtag” is?

Instagram is a free social media app for mobile devices.  It helps you connect with friends, family, organizations, and celebrities through photo sharing. (Think of it as an interactive, digital photo album.) You can “follow” other people to see pictures they’ve uploaded on your own feed.

You can join Instagram in 3 easy steps:

1)      Download the app on your smartphone and/or register at

2)      Create a username and password

3)      Follow your friends, family, organizations, and celebrities to see what’s happening in their lives. To follow others, click on the magnifying glass button at the bottom of your screen. Use the “search” bar to find specific names (like richmondpeace.) Or, click on “People” (located underneath the search bar) for recommendations of people you may know/want to follow on Instagram.

You can even sync your Facebook account to your Instagram to see which friends are also on Instagram. To do this, tap the profile icon in the bottom row on your screen (this is your profile page). To set preferences, tap the gear icon in the upper right corner of your screen. Click “Find Facebook Friends” to connect with your Facebook account. You will be able to see (and choose to follow) Facebook friends that have Instagram accounts.

To automatically upload photos you post on Instagram onto Facebook, tap the gear icon.  Scroll down to the “Linked Accounts” option. Tap the arrow to link your Instagram account to your Facebook account.

To upload a picture, tap the photo lens icon that in the center of the row on the bottom of your screen. Take a picture by pushing the large blue button. Or upload a picture you’ve already taken by clicking the squares to the left of the blue button. You can also record/upload short videos by clicking on the video camera icon.

Once you choose a picture, you also have the option of editing it. Press “Next” in the upper right corner to include a caption under the photo.

When you’re ready to upload, hit “Share.”

So….what is a #hashtag?

A hashtag is a symbol (the “pound sign”) people use to categorize their pictures. A hashtag becomes “trending” when a large number of people (usually millions) use it in their posts. Popular hashtags can be useful to stay up-to-date with current events.

To create a hashtag, just use the # symbol and attach a word or phrase to it (#peace, for example.) You can see which hashtags are popular on Instagram.  Tap the magnifying glass icon and press the search bar. Tap “hashtags” and then search for a specific word or phrase.

Some common hashtags used on Instagram and by the Peace Center are #tbt (Throwback Thursday), #peace, #rva, and #mantramonday. Try searching these hashtags as practice, and see what the Peace Center is up to!
